OTT Live Video Engineer, YouTube

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience working at the national broadcast level, supporting 24/7 live broadcasts, live productions or distribution headends.
  • Experience designing broadcast systems, specifically transmission chains geo-redundant across third-party colos, and technical project management.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience managing and implementing major infrastructure build outs.
  • Experience working with broadcast, network or streaming operations with a focus on operational efficiency.
  • Experience designing and implementing live media workflows.
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment, influencing cross-functional and technical teams, and communicating technical concepts to business stakeholders.
  • Technical product or platform management.
  • Ability to manage several deadlines and deliver under time constraints.

YouTube TV is an over-the-top (OTT) streaming service that brings live TV and video-on-demand over the internet to your phone, tablet, computer, or smart TV. It compliments YouTube's core ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) model to add live sports, news, and local and premium content at a price cheaper than traditional cable. YouTube TV is just 6 years old but already has billions in annual revenue and millions of subscribers. It's a huge bet for YouTube overall. YouTube has also launched Primetime Channels, NFL Sunday Ticket, and continues to expand internationally. There are many projects planned to expand the product offerings.

The OTT Engineering team's mission is to deliver a future-proof video streaming platform, by building and integrating best-in-class tools and services to support the most reliable & amp resilient signal acquisition, workflow optimization, and highest quality media delivery.

In this role you will manage vendor engagements, partner with content providers, and work cross-functionally across YouTube with various technical and business teams. You will be supporting all aspects of OTT focused on content ingestion and processing, with the goal of building the next iteration of YouTube OTT's ingestion infrastructure.

Candidates should have experience in video streaming, broadcast engineering, technical operations, or technical product management. Ideal candidates will also have experience in system design/architecture, integration and broadcast or streaming infrastructure build outs, working with vendors in the broadcast and streaming industry and experience working closely with software engineering and operations.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $142,000-$211,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Provide architectural guidance and integration support of network and software buildouts for a globally scaled live streaming platform.
  • Partner closely with content companies, third-party aggregators and vendors to ingest premium live content to YouTube. Manage multiple vendor relationships and perform build vs buy analysis.
  • Develop new metrics, optimize existing metrics to benchmark stream quality and reliability, and build and implement end-to-end tooling for 24x7 operations teams.
  • Develop and evangelize operational processes when necessary. Contribute to and evangelize a roadmap for workflow automation and operational tooling initiatives.
  • Partner with software engineering teams to build and deploy scalable software to ingest, process, monitor and distribute media content and metadata.
