Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, Public Policy, Business, Political Science, or Economics or equivalent practical experience.
- 15 years of experience in economic development within a corporate organization (e.g., tax, policy, legal, real estate, etc.), law firm, accounting firm, consultancy or government agency.
- Experience in people management with a team size of 50 or more.
Preferred qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate, MBA, or other relevant professional certification.
- Experience with any of the following: site selection for high-technology, industrial-scale projects; real estate evaluation, acquisition, development, and construction; utility contracts; energy-related issues and clean energy initiatives.
- Experience with economic development impact studies or economic development marketing.
- Experience or familiarity with a range of economic development issues such as indirect taxes, economic development policy, infrastructure development, contract drafting and redlining, and presentation development.
About the job
As the Director of Economic Community and Workforce Development, you'll combine your market and tech industry knowledge to support Google's infrastructure growth. You'll build and execute economic development strategies, drive infrastructure labor and workforce development programs, work with industry peers, and present strategies to executive leadership. You'll advocate for Google and the data center industry, while identifying and addressing industry trends.
In this role, you will help to drive location strategy, site selection, and portfolio management for new and existing data center sites and related infrastructure around the world. You will primarily lead the development of the company’s global economic development program for data centers. You'll work closely with a network of internal stakeholders as well as strategic vendors to support the growth of Google’s products and services, and to provide the infrastructure that will help expand the company’s global reach.
You will lead business discussions with key stakeholders. Your knowledge of economic development, compliance, relationship and coalition building, policy and regulation, and company goals will position you to be an advocate for development and management of the global data center portfolio.
You will embed community and workforce development best practices within a rapidly expanding organization, serving as a subject matter expert on WFD delivery, strategic community engagement, and labor market opportunities for data center communities. You will identify future talent resource needs and collaborate with local and regional organizations to bridge skills gaps, creating a sustainable workforce pipeline for the data center ecosystem. Additionally, you will collaborate with education and training organizations to establish talent pathways, ensuring data center communities benefit from the digital economy.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $256,000-$356,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
- Work with internal and external technical teams to identify, define, and pursue new data center site selection and expansion projects and initiatives necessary to meet Google's ongoing data center needs, including strategy development and offering guidance on negotiation of state and local economic development incentive agreements.
- Unlock new markets, reduce overall total cost of ownership, and improve community and stakeholder engagement.
- Support the development of content to broaden and amplify our messaging and planning around the data center lifecycle, and take a leading role in industry coalitions, legislative efforts, policy advancement, and mitigation of industry headwinds.
- Grow, develop, and manage a global community engagement team that includes public affairs and workforce development to drive in-market sentiment and optimize local market operating environments.
