Software Engineer, Android Platform, Google Beam

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with Android internals, operating systems architecture, and C++ programming.
  • Experience in the full software development lifecycle, including building custom developer tools and executing system-level engineering tasks.
  • Experience working on embedded systems, mobile platforms, or integrating software with custom hardware components.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 2 years of experience working with the Android OS (or AOSP), specifically with a track record of successfully contributing to shipped consumer hardware devices.
  • Experience utilizing metrics analysis and telemetry data to drive system performance optimization, power efficiency, and hardware health improvements.
  • Experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) methodologies to build reliable, fault-tolerant operating system components.
  • Experience programming in Rust and Kotlin, along with structural knowledge of the Android Kernel or Chrome OS architectures.
  • Advanced system-level debugging and troubleshooting skills, utilizing standard industry tools to diagnose and resolve complex OS and hardware-interaction issues.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $147,000-$211,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Build and support the Android Platform System and Services to control complex Beam hardware devices, including high-resolution cameras, power management systems, 3D displays, USB interfaces, and thermal management (fans).
  • Drive core Android system integration features for new hardware builds and early-stage prototypes, ensuring seamless communication between the operating system and physical components.
  • Implement robust infrastructure improvements focused on device startup stability, sensor calibration, real-time health monitoring, and automated corrective actions on system failures.
  • Own, design, and optimize developer workflow tools and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to ensure the broader engineering team can build, deploy, and test code efficiently.
  • Strategize and execute the implementation of new platform-level features required for the "instant travel" 3D call experience, collaborating closely with cross-functional hardware and application teams.
