Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6 years of experience in various display technologies (e.g., OLED, micro-LED, LCD) and their trade-offs in volume products.
  • Ability to travel as needed to support bring-up at factories.

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in root cause analysis of complex system-level failures, especially in deployed products.
  • Experience with power delivery and management in portable or battery-powered devices.
  • Experience in collaborating with suppliers or vendors to define technical roadmaps or troubleshoot manufacturing issues.

As a Staff Hardware Engineer on the Google Beam team, you will be a key technical leader in designing and delivering hardware systems for our next-generation communications products. You will be responsible for driving hardware solutions from the initial concept through volume production, with a specific focus on innovative display technologies and their interfaces. You will require expertise in hardware design, debugging, and validation, as well as close collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless system integration.

Project Starline from Google combines advances in hardware and software to enable friends, families and co-workers to feel together, even when they’re cities (or countries) apart. Imagine looking through a magic window, and through that window, you see another person, life-size and in three-dimensions. As part of the Project Starline team, you'll work with researchers and engineers in a fast-paced product-oriented environment. Our teams collaborate closely with Google Workspace and Research teams. Your contributions will have an impact on the future of communications with Google products. You will apply technology to solve that really important problem that we often want to be together and we can’t.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $174,000-$258,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Gather system requirements, define architecture, and execute hardware design for advanced electronic systems, with a focus on display-related components.
  • Drive hardware system development from initial concept through high-volume production.
  • Lead the design, bring-up, and validation of hardware solutions, assisting with deployment and sustaining activities. Lead debug and root cause analysis of complex hardware issues in deployed systems.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Hardware, Firmware, Software, Power, Mechanical, Thermal, Validation, Signal Integrity, Manufacturing, and external vendors to ensure system integration.
  • Partner closely with firmware engineers to support the development and integration of firmware for embedded microcontrollers, FPGAs or ASICs, including those related to display control and interfaces.
