About the job

There's no such thing as a "safe system" - only safer systems. Our Security team works to create and maintain the safest operating environment for Google's users and developers. As a Security Engineer, you help protect network boundaries, keep computer systems and network devices hardened against attacks and provide security services to protect highly sensitive data like passwords and customer information. Security Engineers work directly with network equipment and actively monitor our systems for attacks and intrusions. You also work with software engineers to proactively identify and fix security flaws and vulnerabilities.

You use your industry experience to own and drive the resolution of complex security incidents, policy questions and technical security issues.

As a Staff Security Engineer for Enterprise Security AI, you will serve as a foundational technical leader driving critical enterprise security initiatives. In this role, you will scale our operations by managing complex projects encompassing security consulting, risk management, vulnerability response, and remediation. Your primary focus will be building security capabilities to secure Alphabet’s rapidly expanding use of agentic AI workflows. This involves designing novel prevention and containment strategies and partnering with engineering teams to create paths for secure AI development.

You will guide strategic direction and foster collaboration across enterprise security domains. You will need a background in security engineering and the cross-functional influence necessary to solve ambiguous, large-scale problems. Leveraging expertise in threat modeling, security assessments, access controls, and data protection, you will architect preventative guardrails and mitigate new risks introduced by first and third-party AI agents.

The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of paths for AI use within Alphabet by validating existing advice and guidelines, identifying gaps, and proposing improvements in collaboration with security engineering partners.
  • Propose and validate prevention capabilities to significantly reduce the risk of first-party and third-party agentic AI use, such as ensuring policy adherence and preventing execution of risky actions, by working with security risk leads responsible for reducing Google’s top cybersecurity risks.
  • Drive decisive containment and remediation when high-risk or unauthorized agentic AI use is identified, including suspending rogue agents and executing ongoing remediation tasks.
  • Partner with adjacent enterprise security teams, such as detection and response, identity, access, and endpoints, to ensure cohesive strategies for reducing risk from agentic AI use.
