Data Center Facilities Engineer/Technician, Mechanical

Minimum qualifications:

  • Associate's degree, trade school certification, or other certified training in a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of Mechanical/HVAC, experience in an industrial or commercial environment.
  • Ability to participate in material handling tasks such as lifting, carrying or moving up to 50 lbs (23 kg) of equipment, the required use of safety equipment such as limited weight bearing work platforms, ladders, step stools and personal protective equipment (PPE) like safety harnesses in accordance with safety and ergonomic guidelines and assessments.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours and work rotations/shifts.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with safety rules and regulations associated with operating complex infrastructure.
  • Experience in commissioning of HVAC and mechanical distribution systems (chillers, cooling tower, fire system, air handling units etc.) which include air and water side systems.
  • Experience operating and maintaining mission-critical facilities (data centers, hospitals, pharmaceutical plants, semiconductor facilities, refineries, power plants, etc.) and ability to maintain mechanical systems and resolve system failures.
  • Understanding of electrical and mechanical systems used in a data center environment, including: chillers, air handling units, CRAC units, power feeders/distribution, transformers, generators, switchgears, UPS systems, ATS/STS units and PDU/PMM units.

About the job

The Data Center team designs and operates some of the most sophisticated electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and HVAC systems in the world. Facilities Technicians at Google data centers operate, monitor and support physical facilities conditions. Some of these duties will include heating and cooling of air and water, power supply, generators, UPS systems, electrical distribution and control and monitoring systems. You regularly help inspect, maintain and repair various data center systems such as piping and non-critical electrical or mechanical system components).

As an advocate for best practices, you develop creative approaches to reducing operational costs while improving overall data center efficiency. You ensure that environmental and safety standards are consistently met, identifying problems and making repairs quickly. In emergency situations or abnormal conditions, you manage data center performance issues and outages to minimize the recovery time from failures.

As a Facilities Technician, you will operate, monitor, and support physical facilities conditions for our data centers.

In this role, you will ensure operational integrity and compliance of data center mechanical systems. you will drive system reliability, leading commissioning activities, managing daily operations, leading efficiency improvement projects, and overseeing the comprehensive maintenance program, including vendor management, while adhering to all legal and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the uptime, maintenance, operation, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical equipment within the data center environment, executing operational procedures, responding to work requests, and providing technical expertise.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for service failures, implement recovery and prevention actions, and provide tracking and trending of operational characteristics to enhance system reliability.
  • Lead and support the startup, commissioning, and integration of new mechanical equipment and systems into the facilities infrastructure, coordinating vendor support for repairs and project implementation.
  • Drive continuous improvement in site Water Usage Effectiveness and Power Usage Effectiveness, optimize operational efficiency, and minimize environmental impact.
  • Develop an understanding of the infrastructure design and sequence of operations, prepare and conduct training for the team, and ensure compliance with all site environmental health and safety policies.
