Senior Software Engineer, NotebookLM Backend Infrastructure

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages, and with data structures/algorithms.
  • 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.
  • 3 years of experience developing infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage or hardware architecture.
  • Experience with software development in Kotlin or Java.
  • Experience building production product backends and infrastructure.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • Experience working collaboratively in teams and across teams.
  • Experience working closely with cross-functional partners to rapidly develop, test, and deploy new consumer products.
  • Generalist software engineer background with experience building end to end application.
  • Knowledge of the generative AI landscape and architectures for integrating into products.
  • Proven track record of working with new technology.

As a Software Engineer on the NotebookLM team, you'll be part of a small but growing team that will push the boundaries of how information can be understood and shared in the age of AI. Embed yourself on a highly functioning team with a set of skills spanning research, prototyping, and production infrastructure, work with some of the most cutting edge technical developments happening today (e.g. generative AI, agentic systems) across all modalities (language, vision, audio). Working on one of Google’s most loved and newest products, collaboratively with excellent cross-functional partners (PM, UX, PgM, UXR, DS, etc.) to develop completely new ways for people to understand information and create shareable content.

Labs is a group focused on incubating early-stage efforts in support of Google’s mission to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Our team exists to help discover and create new ways to advance our core products through exploration and the application of new technologies. We work to build new solutions that have the potential to transform how users interact with Google. Our goal is to drive innovation by developing new Google products and capabilities that deliver significant impact over longer timeframes.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $166,000-$244,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Review code developed by other developers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
  • Triage product or system issues and debug/track/resolve by analyzing the sources of issues and the impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality.
