Engineering Manager, Computer Vision, ML Incubation

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience
  • 8 years of experience with ML/AI algorithms and tools, deep learning or other AI/ML modeling.
  • 5 years of team management experience or leadership experience.
  • Experience with change management.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in machine learning or computer vision (e.g., deep neural networks, evaluation and metrics, probabilistic graphical models, semi-supervised learning, etc.).
  • Experience in thought leadership and structured problem-solving, with the ability to work on operational initiatives.
  • Experience in Generative AI.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills within the Machine Learning and AI domain.

With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.

As a part of the SOLA team, a specialized group within Geo Perception, with deep expertise in computer vision, applied research, and machine learning. You will focus on multi-view data association (lidar, geometry and knowledge) and end-to-end multimodal models. You will prioritize evaluation, metrics, and automation to ensure solutions deliver real-world value, launching used daily by users. In this role, you will incubate and accelerate high-priority, game-changing efforts across Geo Perception and geospatial understanding, enabling Geo and Google to understand and represent the physical world with unprecedented scale, accuracy, detail, and bringing value to users.The Geo team is focused on building the most accurate, comprehensive, and useful maps for our users, through products like Maps, Earth, Street View, Google Maps Platform, and more. Every month, more than a billion people rely on Maps services to explore the world and navigate their daily lives.

The Geo team also enables developers to use the power of Google Maps platforms to enhance their apps and websites. As they plot a course for the future of mapping, they are solving computer science problems, designing beautiful and intuitive product experiences, and improving our understanding of the real world.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the direction and operational execution of the SOLA team, driving the incubation and productionization of computer goal and AI research at scale in close collaboration with partner teams.
  • Apply computer goals or ML expertise to provide technical leadership and mentorship to researchers and engineers, partnering with the Area Tech-Lead to identify key issues and investment opportunities, develop plans, and influence stakeholders to achieve significant cross-organizational impact.
  • Manage a team of executive specialists, balancing long-term research investments with short to medium-term deliverables across Geo Auto, Geo Developer, Geo Consumer, and Cloud.
  • Integrate innovative solutions into Google Maps, advance technology stacks, and foster collaboration across organizational boundaries.
  • Prioritize continuous learning, contribute to sustainable solutions, and enhance the Google Maps product.
