Senior Software Engineer, Generative AI, NotebookLM, Labs

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience in building and shipping software systems.
  • 5 years of experience developing and deploying production-quality software, using Python in a modern cloud environment.
  • 3 years of experience building, testing, and launching user-facing software products, with experience in software design and architecture for scalable services.
  • 3 years of experience in one or more relevant AI/ML areas, such as speech and audio synthesis, multimodal models, or other GenAI applications.
  • 3 years of experience deploying and managing ML infrastructure for production GenAI models.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field.
  • 5 years of experience applying advanced data structures and algorithms to solve large-scale computational problems.
  • Experience in driving projects from conception (zero-to-one) to launch, influencing technical direction, and mentoring engineers.
  • Experience with Kotlin and other similar languages.
  • Experience developing technologies with a focus on accessibility and ethical AI design, especially regarding synthetic voice/multimedia and bias mitigation.
  • Familiarity with Google's internal software development infrastructure.

The Software Engineering team within Google Labs, is a small, autonomous, and fast-moving group dedicated to pushing the boundaries of generative AI and launching new products quickly. Our organization is responsible for publicly launched, innovative AI products and platforms like AI Studio, the Gemini API, and NotebookLM. We are seeking engineers to join a sub-team focused on synthetic audio and multimedia content generation, building on the success of features like NotebookLM Audio Overviews.

Labs is a group focused on incubating early-stage efforts in support of Google’s mission to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Our team exists to help discover and create new ways to advance our core products through exploration and the application of new technologies. We work to build new solutions that have the potential to transform how users interact with Google. Our goal is to drive innovation by developing new Google products and capabilities that deliver significant impact over longer timeframes.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $166,000-$244,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, implementation, and testing of core product features and GenAI services.
  • Drive technical excellence and efficiency by actively participating in design reviews and performing high-quality code reviews, particularly focusing on the accuracy, performance, and scalability of GenAI models and services.
  • Develop and maintain critical technical documentation for GenAI model deployment, service architecture, and evaluation pipelines to enable iteration and knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Take ownership of product quality by triaging, debugging, and resolving issues in low-latency, high-throughput GenAI services, analyzing root causes related to model performance, data pipelines, and production infrastructure.
  • Design and implement novel GenAI solutions in areas like synthetic audio and multimedia generation, effectively utilizing large-scale ML infrastructure to bring latest research to user-facing features in NotebookLM and other products.
