Staff Software Engineer, Infrastructure, Storage

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products.
  • 5 years of experience working with storage systems and products.
  • Experience developing software applications using the C or C++ programming language.
  • Experience with Linux.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related
    technical field.
  • 8 years of experience with data structures/algorithms.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project
    teams and setting technical direction.
  • Experience with high-performance storage systems or devices, including
    large-scale deployment, management and monitoring utilities, and
    Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) firmware/driver/system software, working with suppliers and manufacturers.
  • Experience with the technology, characteristics, and applications
    of flash memory.
  • Experience with operating systems and with Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Express.

Platforms Storage teams design and build storage solutions for all of Google's services. Everything from Gmail messages to YouTube videos, Web Search indexes, Google Cloud customers' data, along with ML and AI systems, all ultimately reside securely on storage devices built by Platforms Storage teams.

As a Software Engineer in SSD team of Platform Storage, you will use your design and coding skills to develop next-generation disruptive technologies for firmware and software that spans all platforms storage systems. You will design, develop, and maintain big data analytics infrastructure to help us monitor, troubleshoot, and derive insights from the storage devices in Google’s infrastructure. You will ensure a high level of quality in your software by writing tests for your code and leveraging Google's leading-edge test and release infrastructure.Google Cloud accelerates every organization’s ability to digitally transform its business and industry. We deliver enterprise-grade solutions that leverage Google’s technology, and tools that help developers build more sustainably. Customers in more than 200 countries and territories turn to Google Cloud as their trusted partner to enable growth and solve their most critical business problems.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $197,000-$291,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal customers such as cloud, search, file/object storage teams, etc.) and external vendors to enable timely onboarding of new storage systems and a flexible portfolio strategy.
  • Lead a small team (3-5 engineers) to evaluate and develop new flash storage technologies, firmware, drivers, health monitors, and storage management solution.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction for projects while working closely with cross-functional teams. Design, develop, and review systems designs and code from peers, within the scope of the broader area.
  • Develop and maintain platform storage analytics infrastructure to help monitor, troubleshoot, and derive insights on the storage devices in the fleet.
