Hardware Test Engineer

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar) or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1 year of experience applying ISTA or ASTM standards in testing environments.
  • 1 year of experience working in a hardware engineering lab environment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 3 years of experience working in an Engineering laboratory environment.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams on bring-up tasks (e.g., hardware assembly, programming with hardware tools, and firmware updates).
  • Experience configuring network switches.
  • Experience managing and organizing lab inventory of highly used consumables by lab users.

Google's custom-designed machines make up one of the largest and most powerful computing infrastructures in the world. The Hardware Testing Engineering team ensures that this cutting-edge equipment is reliable. In the R&D lab, you design test equipment for prototypes of our machinery and develop the protocols used to scale these tests for the entire global team. Working closely with design engineers, you give input on designs to improve our hardware until you're sure it meets Google's standards of quality and reliability.

We are seeking a highly motivated and versatile individual to join our team as a Hardware Test Engineer. In this role you will require a strong foundation in hardware testing and analysis, encompassing the design and execution of comprehensive test plans, development and maintenance of test fixtures, and in-depth troubleshooting of complex technical issues, including hardware and network debugging. You will also contribute to efficient lab operations by managing inventory, setting up new labs, and ensuring a safe and organized environment. You will ensure the quality, reliability, and smooth operation of our hardware products and lab infrastructure through meticulous testing, insightful data analysis, effective problem-solving, and a proactive approach to lab support.

This role does require the ability to lift/move 30lb (14kg) of equipment and ability to exert yourself physically over extended periods of time, including frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing/pulling and lifting.

The role requires working onsite 5 days a week.The US base salary range for this full-time position is $105,000-$151,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Administer Linux systems, debug network issues impacting lab connectivity and test setups. Configure network switches.
  • Collaborate on new lab setups documenting configurations, prioritizing bring-up tasks, and managing lab inventory (consumables/equipment).
  • Troubleshoot hardware issues and implement solutions, aiming for a 15% reduction in downtime.
  • Collect and record test data with 99% accuracy, perform basic analysis, and generate concise reports within 24 hours of testing.
  • Support cross-functional teams with prototype assembly (aim: complete within defined timelines), hardware programming, and firmware updates (aim: zero failed installations).
