Principal Engineer, SaaS Runtime, Google Cloud

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience working as a technical software engineering leader.
  • 5 years of experience in architecting and launching platforms.
  • 5 years of experience with cloud or distributed systems-based architectures.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, or other relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience developing high-growth technology products and services.
  • Understanding of trade-offs involved in language design decisions, including performance, readability, expressiveness and safety considerations.
  • Ability to balance detailed, technical guidance with big picture strategy, enabling teams to deliver products that are effective.

About the job

As the Principal Engineer and technical lead for Google Cloud's SaaS Runtime, you will architect the foundational platform that accelerates the entire Google Cloud Platform service ecosystem. Your mission is to empower both internal product teams and external partners to deliver secure, compliant, and reliable solutions using multiple tenancy models at planet-scale. By providing a standardized framework for building, deploying, and operating services across all Google environments—from public to sovereign and air-gapped clouds—you will enable our partners to focus on innovation, not infrastructure.

In this role, you will define the platform's long-term technical road map, setting the standard for engineering excellence while mentoring the development team. You will act as a trusted advisor to service producers, translating their requirements into elegant solutions and advocating for their needs across the organization. As a key thought leader, you will influence senior engineering leaders across Google Cloud to drive architectural alignment and deliver cohesive, impactful outcomes for our customers.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $294,000-$414,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Drive the technical direction for SaaS Runtime for Google Cloud and other Google products.
  • Work day-to-day with technical and engineering leaders across Google (both platforms and producer teams) to drive solutions.
  • Work within the platform team as a technical thought leader and mentor to other individual contributors.
  • Drive adoption and integration of the platform by providing technical guidance and support to product teams.
