About the job
We are looking for a Principal Engineer to join Infrastructure Site Reliability Engineering. You will provide executive level technical leadership for a large organization that is responsible for reliable operation, engineering, and evolution of Google's Compute Infrastructure. This includes our scheduling systems, our quota and capacity management systems, our machine management systems, our on-node software, our interaction with data centers, and our new platform introductions for both ML and non-ML workloads. As Principal Engineer you are not just a deep technical expert but an exceptional leader influencing projects and delivering a complex technical roadmap across multiple organizations/teams.
Behind everything our users see online is the architecture built by the Technical Infrastructure team to keep it running. From developing and maintaining our data centers to building the next generation of Google platforms, we make Google's product portfolio possible. We're proud to be our engineers' engineers and love voiding warranties by taking things apart so we can rebuild them. We keep our networks up and running, ensuring our users have the best and fastest experience possible.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $294,000-$414,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include bonus, equity, or benefits. Learn more about benefits at Google.
Responsibilities
- Create, design and lead innovative programs, software, and analytics that drive improvements to the reliability, scalability, efficiency, and velocity of new platform introductions and existing hardware, our machine management systems, and our node software.
- Work in close partnership with product leads across multiple areas, on technologies up and down Google's tall and deep stack to design and help build fast, reliable, and durable production systems.
- Collaborate with engineering teams who are the users of our compute infrastructure (e.g. GCE) and across Foundational Infrastructure SRE.
- Work in tandem with Directors and VPs to define and execute technical strategy and arbitrate technical processes and decisions.
