About the job
As Principal Engineer, you will advance the technology powering YouTube Search so it will unlock the power of AI to serve higher quality results, to offer novel search experiences and to increase YouTube viewership. You will drive the YouTube Search engine to be the #1 video search engine.
The YouTube Search stack is highly complex, combining the richness of the Google Search stack with the intricacy of the YouTube stack. Mastering it and figuring out how to advance it and how to make it more performant, while relying on a modest sized engineering team is a difficult challenge. As Principal Engineer, you will need to manage technical problems in diverse domains, ranging from AI and ML, search ranking, trust and safety, infrastructure, feature development, and developer experience. You will need to navigate a complex organization, effectively.
In this role, you will drive the technical strategy for YouTube Search, defining how the technology should evolve to meet product needs, leverage new technologies, and support developer innovation and velocity. You will define a technical roadmap, collaborating with managers, Product Managers, and Technical Program Managers to lay out the system architecture and prioritize work items. This role involves making technical decisions, such as design approvals, and driving technical collaborations with other teams within YouTube and Google. You will stay up-to-date with the latest technology and research, share relevant information with the team, mentor and educate engineers, and cultivate a culture of technical excellence and innovation. At YouTube, we believe that everyone deserves to have a voice, and that the world is a better place when we listen, share, and build community through our stories. We work together to give everyone the power to share their story, explore what they love, and connect with one another in the process. Working at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and boundless creativity, we move at the speed of culture with a shared goal to show people the world. We explore new ideas, solve real problems, and have fun — and we do it all together.
