Software Engineer III, Cloud Sustainability Tools, Full Stack

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
  • 2 years of experience with full stack development, across back-end with Python, C++, and SQL; and front-end experience including JavaScript or TypeScript, HTML, CSS or equivalent.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical fields.
  • 2 years of experience with data structures or algorithms.
  • Experience developing accessible technologies.
  • Experience working from project conception, through experimentation, development, testing, and user support in production environments.
  • Familiarity with Google3 infrastructure (Piper, TAP, Business Intelligence Platform, Data Studio etc.).
  • Familiarity with Scope 3 carbon accounting methodologies.

The Cloud Environmental and Social Responsibility team is tasked with managing down Technical Infrastructure’s data center hardware supply chain emissions. We unlock reductions by developing decarbonization solutions and supplier partnerships to help achieve Google's Net Zero goals.

The Cloud Sustainability Tools team builds internal tooling and externalized products to support AI and Infrastructures (AI2) drive towards industry leading carbon efficiency. We are building automation to enable the quantification, tracking and forecasting of emissions and reductions. We have also forged a collaboration across the hyperscalers, and defined common best practice for doing this carbon focused Life Cycle Assessment modeling at scale. We build an ecosystem of open enablers to help accelerate our supply chain’s ability to deliver the actionable carbon footprinting data needed drive decarbonization.

Responsibilities

  • Build open software to accelerate the adoption of product level footprinting across the IT hardware industry.
  • Build and scale state-of-the-art automated life cycle assessment models across Google Cloud’s entire hardware portfolio.
  • Work with cross-functional teams, leadership, engineers, program managers, and data scientists to understand business and application needs.
  • Create technical design documents detailing and laying out rationale and getting input and buy-in to key technical decisions.
  • Build and continuously refine end-to-end applications, working at multiple levels of stack from backend pipelines to frontend UIs.
