Battery Design Mechanical Engineer

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 2 years of experience in creating 3D CAD model for battery cell internal structure or pack design including PCM/BMU for consumer electronics, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
  • Experience in using 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, NX).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with battery testing standards and procedures.
  • Experience in designing for manufacturability and assembly.
  • Understanding of mechanical characterization principles and techniques relevant to battery materials and structures.
  • Understanding of the internal cell structure and manufacturing process.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent problem solving, critical thinking and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate in a team environment.

The Google Pixel team focuses on designing and delivering the world's most helpful mobile experience. The team works on shaping the future of Pixel devices and services through some of the most advanced designs, techniques, products, and experiences in consumer electronics. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $126,000-$181,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed 3D models and 2D drawings of battery cells (pouch, prismatic) and battery pack assemblies, considering factors such as robustness from mechanical shock or vibration, energy density, power density, safety, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Utilize principles of mechanical engineering and material science to analyze the structural integrity of battery cells and packs under various operating conditions (vibration, shock, compression, thermal cycling).
  • Apply a thorough understanding of the internal components and architecture of various battery cell chemistries and cell structure (e.g., winding, stacking) to inform design decisions and ensure compatibility.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive design documentation, including 3D models, 2D drawings, specifications, BOMs (Bill of Materials), and test reports.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, thermal engineers, manufacturing engineers, and cell suppliers, to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance.
