Staff Design Manager, Discover, Explore and Search

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in product design or UX for consumer-facing products.
  • 3 years of experience leading design projects and managing people or teams.
  • 2 years of experience working with executive leaders.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience designing software that uses artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), collaborating with AI engineers and scientists.
  • Experience in startup or business owner .
  • Experience in designing 0-1 products and in motion design.
  • Ability to listen and articulate positions to influence partners with new design thinking to evolve products.
  • Excellent communication skills.

About the job

In this role, you will be responsible for leveraging AI, personalization and new technologies to improve personalization in the Google app home feed. You will manage a team to innovate with velocity, inspiring them to solve hard problems and design how new technology can be applied to user desires, while also helping invent, design and collaborate with the team for sketching, writing, pitching, presenting, critiquing, polishing, branding, launching. You will balance strong unique contributor skills with a focus on product invention and leadership.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $178,000-$265,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

Responsibilities

  • Lead UX and manage a small team of designers accountable for shipping bold, new features based on user insights, business needs, and industry trends that advance business outcomes.
  • Drive the development of design solutions to user, product, and business problems, functioning as a strong player-coach manager who is excited to bring the product to life through drawing, workshops, critique, and presentation.
  • Influence stakeholders across functions to gain support for design strategies through written and verbal communication skills.
  • Collaborate across the Discover and Explore UX team and cross-functional partners with a mindset to manage big questions and explore new product opportunities.
