Government Affairs and Public Policy Manager AI and State Management

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 years of experience working on technology policy issues within government, think tanks, public interest groups, law, or relevant industry associations.
  • 10 years of experience working in public affairs, political communications, or political campaigns, or within government.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working with or in government agencies at the state level, industry associations, or research institutions focused on AI.
  • Experience leading complex, cross-functional policy campaigns and providing strategic counsel to business teams in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with AI frameworks and ability to learn and think critically about the latest research in AI, including its societal and ethical implications and relevance to the Indian context.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders, drive consensus on complex issues, and effectively manage multiple projects while keeping senior leadership informed.

About the job

As a member of Google’s Government Affairs and Public Policy team, you'll be part of a diverse global government affairs team, working across regions, product areas, and functions. You’ll combine creativity and intellectual excellence with the organizational skills to manage various campaigns, projects and initiatives. In this role, you’ll advocate for Google to bring external perspectives back into the company to inform our perception and direction. You're passionate about the opportunity to shape the future of how we use and build technology for everyone.

In this role, you will lead the execution of AI projects in Indian states, collaborating with Google teams to identify challenges, develop and deploy solutions across various sectors. You will also shape Google's stance on AI and Geo policy issues, ensuring compliance with local needs and Google’s business objectives, while supporting senior leadership engagement with government officials and industry experts.

Google takes its responsibilities seriously, including engaging with government and other stakeholders on important public policy challenges. The Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) team leads the company’s engagement with executive branch officials, legislators, regulators and third-parties in the formation of public policy. Working closely with Google leaders, GAPP seeks to identify key policy issues, listen carefully to others’ views and opinions, and distill and share the company’s perspective on those issues with external stakeholders. While we focus on challenges affecting the internet, our issue areas are increasingly broad and encompass many areas where public policy, business, and technology intersect.

Responsibilities

  • Execute AI projects in Indian states end-to-end; identify challenges, develop solutions with Google teams, secure resources, deploy across sectors (agriculture, healthcare, sustainability, education, startups).
  • Analyze legislative and regulatory proposals concerning AI, Geo and sustainability, assessing their potential impact on Google's products and operations in India. Develop and advocate for Google's positions on key issues, aligning them with our principles while incorporating India's specific market needs.
  • Partner with Legal, Product, and other teams to provide expert guidance on AI and Geo matters, ensuring responsible product development and compliance with evolving/upcoming regulations.
  • Analyze policy developments and emerging risks and provide recommendations to senior leadership enabling informed decision-making on Google's India strategy.
  • Cultivate relationships with relevant state officials, regulators, industry experts, and civil society organizations to foster dialogue and collaboration on AI projects and relevant policy issues.
