About the job

Data Protection is at the heart of everything we do, and as we design our products, we focus on three key principles: keeping user information safe, treating it responsibly, and putting users in control. The Privacy, Safety and Security (PSS) organization within Google helps teams across the company deliver essential products that set the bar in the industry, while also treating users with the profound respect they deserve when it comes to controlling and understanding their data.

The Core organization is seeking a Vice President of Engineering to lead a newly formed Data Protection Engineering function in PSS. In this role, you will set the vision, strategy, and execution plans for Google’s data protection mission by providing technical and organizational leadership to deliver the rollout and ongoing maintenance of full data provenance, access, and usage across all products and technical platforms.

Given Google’s mission statement to organize and make useful the world’s information, there is no end to the growth and complexity in this role as we support all Google product areas. To do this correctly, the data management and control plane needs to be fully automated but also seamless and low latency across all of Google.

The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

The US base salary for this full-time position is $550,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include bonus, equity, or benefits. Learn more about benefits at Google.

Responsibilities

  • Build a central Data Protection Engineering organization in Core, with embedded partner teams across multiple Google product areas.
  • Refine and implement the technical and organizational strategy for fully automated data flow management and protection across all of Google. This requires considering both ambiguous and fast changing internal environments and complex coordination across many teams coming together from different places to develop a coherent roadmap for the solutions organization.
  • Oversee the Privacy and Policy Infrastructure organization, supporting privacy-safe data work that is fast, effortless, and ubiquitous.
