Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- 15 years of professional experience in engineering
Preferred qualifications:
- Master's degree or PhD
- Experience motivating others to act by creating a shared sense of vision or purpose, creating a compelling technical vision for the future, and communicating clearly
- Experience with distributed systems, managed services, large-scale data processing, and working with and supporting customers (customer empathy)
- Experience with technical innovation within large complex cross-functional engineering projects
- Experience with ideation and innovating technology at scale, and passion for development and the use of cross-platform shared code
About the job
Streaming Analytics is an organization of software engineers responsible for messaging and data processing products for internal Google consumption and external consumption. As the Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for setting the technical strategy for GCP Data Analytics’ stream data processing portfolio, which includes PubSub and Google Managed Kafka. Google Cloud Pub/Sub is a fully-managed, real-time messaging service that enables decoupled, asynchronous communication between applications using a publish-subscribe model. Publishers send messages to topics, and subscribers receive them, allowing for flexible and scalable architectures. Cloud Pub/Sub differentiates itself through its serverless operation, global scale, high reliability with at-least-once delivery, and seamless integration with other Google Cloud services for data analytics and event-driven workflows. External customers leverage it for real-time data ingestion (e.g., from IoT devices and applications), building event-driven microservices, and streaming data to analytics platforms like BigQuery.
Google also heavily relies on the same core messaging technology underpinning Cloud Pub/Sub for many of its own large-scale internal systems. Google Cloud Managed Service for Apache Kafka is a fully-managed service that simplifies deploying and operating Apache Kafka clusters on Google Cloud. It provides full compatibility with open-source Kafka APIs and tooling, allowing organizations to easily migrate existing self-managed Kafka workloads or build new event-driven applications. Unlike Google Cloud Pub/Sub, this service caters specifically to users who require native Apache Kafka functionality.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $307,000-$427,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
- Partner with per-product and cross-functional leads (e.g., PM, SRE) to articulate the overall roadmap for the portfolio.
- Help own complex cross-organization efforts (e.g., release velocity, PubSub/Goops unification, cross-product integrations, Pub/Sub backlog statics and Google Managed Kafka reliability).
- Be responsible for organization wide engineering excellence (e.g., the right level of visibility/accuracy/follow-through for technical reviews).
- Understand our products’ relative strengths and weaknesses and then shape the roadmap accordingly.
- Mentor for per-product team leads.
