About the job

At Google, the Legal Investigation Support Engineering (LIS Eng) team operates at the critical intersection of global law enforcement and user privacy. We build the proprietary tools and large-scale infrastructure required to evaluate and fulfill sensitive data requests from government authorities worldwide. Our mission is high-stakes: we develop the software necessary to catch bad actors while fiercely protecting our users from legal overreach. Because our work touches data from virtually every Google product including Gmail, YouTube, and Workspace joining LIS means managing technical issues on a massive scale to keep Google compliant without compromising on safety.

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of six to eight engineers, guiding them through unique architectural hurdles while fostering their professional advancement. You will solve issues to intake, process, and securely export sensitive data, leveraging advanced automation and machine learning to intercept overbroad requests. Your role ensures we produce exactly what is legally required no more, and no less.

You will chart the future course for our tooling and services, coordinating with corporate lawyers, policy advisors, and product departments to guarantee our data pipelines function flawlessly. We are constantly scaling our infrastructure to keep pace with the rapidly shifting landscape of global data regulations. By directing these initiatives, your leadership will ensure Google cooperates with legitimate legal procedures while vigorously shielding the fundamental rights of our worldwide customer base. In this role, your technical skills and goals will directly safeguard digital privacy on a global scale.The US base salary range for this full-time position is $207,000-$300,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Define the technical roadmap to scale systems ahead of Google’s growing product portfolio and shifting global data regulations.
  • Deliver secure backend services and intuitive front-end interfaces capable of extracting sensitive data from massive platforms like Gmail, YouTube, and Android.
  • Integrate AI/ML and advanced automation to automatically process and flag overbroad law enforcement requests, ensuring strict legal compliance.
  • Lead technical decisions across full-stack frameworks and high-performance distributed infrastructure while maintaining rigorous standards for encryption and secure data handling.
  • Partner with corporate lawyers, policy advisors, and product engineering teams to translate global legal mandates into flawless data pipelines.
