Staff Software Engineer, Storage Everywhere

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products.
  • 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
  • 3 years of experience specifically designing, developing, or operating distributed storage systems (e.g., block, file, or object storage).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 8 years of experience with data structures/algorithms.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • Experience contributing to or extending Kubernetes storage components or other container orchestration frameworks.
  • Experience in Go (Golang) or a similar high-performance systems programming language (e.g., C++).
  • Knowledge of major cloud platforms and comparative understanding of their core storage services.

The Storage Everywhere team is building the storage backbone for Google's commitment to hybrid and multi-cloud computing. Our goal is to empower customers to run stateful Kubernetes applications consistently across all Anthos platforms, from Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and traditional hybrid environments to the highly secured Google Distributed Cloud Air-Gapped. We architect and implement the core storage technology that makes true application portability possible.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $197,000-$291,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of Kubernetes-native distributed storage solutions for GDC Air-Gapped, ensuring high reliability and data integrity.
  • Set the long-term technical roadmap and goals for the GDC Storage Everywhere initiative, aligning technical goals with a broader Google Cloud strategy.
  • Serve as the technical expert, providing architectural guidance and actively mentoring junior engineers on best practices.
  • Collaborate with internal infrastructure teams and the OSS community to integrate and advocate storage requirements unique to air-gapped environments.
  • Establish standards for system reliability, performance, and compliance to meet the strict regulatory demands of air-gapped deployments.
