Director of Engineering, Maps Search and Explore

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience in engineering management.
  • Experience building consumer products atop machine-learned outcomes, reconciling product requirements with model capabilities.
  • Experience building customer-facing functionality, including guiding early stage products to product-market fit and scaling products to user bases.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated organizational leadership, with the ability to partner effectively across teams and cross-functional boundaries.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to represent complex technical, product or business concepts with senior leadership.
  • Proven success leading teams at scale, including growing engineering talent and fostering healthy engineering organizations.
  • Track record of driving initiatives from strategy to execution to address open-ended, ambiguous problems.
  • A passion for technology and technical depth to uncover root causes of complex technical problems and provide guidance on solving them.

We’re looking for a technical, consumer focused engineering leader to take Search and Explore product journeys to the next level.

Google is looking for a Director of Engineering to lead the Search and Explore organization. This leader will drive the strategy and roadmap for Local Search within Maps, especially looking forward to the ways GenAI will revolutionize real-world problem solving. You will do this with a team of highly skilled cross-functional teams across engineering, product, user experience/research, legal and privacy.

The Geo team is focused on building the most accurate, comprehensive, and useful maps for our users, through products like Maps, Earth, Street View, Google Maps Platform, and more. Every month, more than a billion people rely on Maps services to explore the world and navigate their daily lives.

The Geo team also enables developers to use the power of Google Maps platforms to enhance their apps and websites. As they plot a course for the future of mapping, they are solving complex computer science problems, designing beautiful and intuitive product experiences, and improving our understanding of the real world.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $294,000-$414,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of 60+ Bay Area/NYC engineers spanning Android, iOS, backend, and quality/ranking/evaluation.
  • Develop the strategy and drive execution for business-critical efforts requiring strong partnership across teams (Maps, Search, Gemini).
  • Take end to end accountability for user problems, demonstrating deep user empathy, cross-functional leadership initiatives, a mixture of quantitative and qualitative approaches to problem-solving.
  • Create a toolkit of Geo capabilities that enable conversational products within Maps and across Google.
  • Balance direct contribution to Google Maps outcomes with platformization and export of technical outcomes to the rest of the engineering organization.
