Director, Communications and Public Affairs, DACH

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience in Communications in matrixed business, media, or non-profit environments.
  • Experience with senior executives and leadership teams as stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate in English and German fluently to support client relationship management in this region.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in working with consumer technology at a multi-product company as a senior communications leader.
  • Experience in management across multiple countries.
  • Solid understanding of consumer and ad tech and policy landscape, including artificial intelligence, privacy, and security.
  • Established well-developed media relationships across consumer, business, and technology press in Germany.

About the job

As a member of the Global Communications & Public Affairs team, you will work cross-functionally to help communicate with journalists and other thought leaders. You will devise specific communications materials and campaigns based on understanding of journalists' interests, engage in face-to-face meetings with commentators and other opinion formers, develop print and web-based material supporting these campaigns, and counter misinformation that might interfere with our business and ability to serve our users. You'll work to understand complex issues and explain them in person and also via well-written, simple blog posts, FAQs, video scripts and more.

As the Director of Communications for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, you will drive an integrated communications strategy internally and externally, manage and grow a team of communications professionals, work cross-functionally to communicate with journalists and other thought leaders, and devise specific communications materials and campaigns across the region. You’ll lead a team in telling clear stories about our products, distinctive company culture/values, and our approach to the big policy issues affecting us and our industry.

In this role, you’ll manage numerous projects at once, from preparing concise written materials that communicate key messages, to managing multi-country campaigns and budgets, to cultivating relationships with international media outlets. As a member of the Google Germany management team you will work with senior sales, policy, and marketing leads to help set a clear narrative and strategy for people to have a clear understanding of our business.

We help inform and educate users, advertisers, partners, opinion leaders--and our own employees--about the benefits of Google's products, our distinctive company culture/values and our approach to the big public policy issues of the day. You are quick-witted, entrepreneurial and intellectually curious. To succeed in this role, you are willing to try new things and can manage numerous projects with tight deadlines. Things happen quickly at Google, and to do great work, you need to be an enthusiastic team player who can work cross-functionally with partners across PR, Communications, Marketing, Product, and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Create long-term multi-channel communications and storytelling campaigns about our products and projects.
  • Develop close, productive relationships with editors, creators, influencers, product reviewers and our key partners in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
  • Train and provide advice to company officials for press conferences, and media interviews and managing PR agencies to help support day-to-day inquiries, special projects, and events inquiries, and events.
  • Lead and develop a team of experienced communicators and manage team budgets and operational strategy.
