Senior Product Design Engineer

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience in failure analysis for consumer electronic products at component and system levels.
  • Experience using computer-aided design tools such as NX, Creo, CATIA or Solidworks.
  • Experience with one or more of the following statistical analysis tools: Minitab, JMP Ansys.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in failure analysis for consumer electronic products.
  • 5 years of experience working with lab tools to answer questions.
  • Experience with inspection equipment (X-ray, CT, SEM/EDX), FTIR, DSC and with with NX and Teamcenter.
  • Knowledge of FATP process for consumer electronic products in Phones and wearable devices.

About the job

As a member of a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team, you use your creativity and range of engineering experience to explore solutions to a variety of engineering problems. As a mechanical engineer, you participate in the design, analysis, and prototyping of new concepts. You work in a manufacturing and product oriented development environment and collaborate with vendors and outside sources in order to see parts through to manufacture. The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the investigation of hardware device failures, including but not limited to: materials, electrical, component quality, design and assembly.
  • Apply scientific principles and techniques to identify the fundamental cause(s) of hardware device failures.
  • Utilize techniques such as microscopy, Computed Tomography (CT), Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), and basic electrical probing to identify failure modes.
  • Develop professional failure analysis documentation that can be read by both technical and non-technical audiences. Develop new methods and laboratory procedures to address emerging challenges and improve failure analysis capabilities.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to provide recommendations and support corrective actions either in design, process or both for highly complex parts or subsystems from concept to production.
