Vice President, Government Affairs and Public Policy

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 18 years of experience working within consumer or technology corporations, government, think tanks, public interest groups, or technology industry groups.
  • 15 years of experience in Government Affairs & Public Policy.
  • Experience in leading a team of professionals.
  • Experience working with international teams and a variety of stakeholders, and in executing strategies to deliver solutions.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Public-speaking experience and passion for technology sector policy issues.
  • Experience working in high-stress environments and ability to thrive in a fast moving environment.
  • Familiarity with technology industry and products and the policy and political environments that surround them.
  • Excellent communicator with great people and presentation skills, including ability to write well and translate complex issues into simple language that people who are not experts can understand.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Team player who can work with people from a broad range of backgrounds and experience, including to lead campaigns and mentor more junior members.

About the job

As a member of Google’s GAPP team, you will be part of a diverse global government affairs team, working across regions, product areas, and functions. In this role, you will be required to harness your creativity and intellectual prowess to effectively oversee a diverse range of campaigns, projects, and initiatives. Furthermore, you will need to adapt to evolving circumstances and manage competing priorities across multiple internal and external stakeholders.

As Vice President and leader of our GAPP team in India, you will represent Google externally at the highest levels with government, regulators and third-parties, and also manage our stellar team of policy professionals across different product areas including Cloud, Knowledge and Information, YouTube, and Platform and Devices. You will be responsible for determining and managing our key policy campaigns in-country and also for coordinating with colleagues across Google’s global GAPP organization. You'll also collaborate closely with regional and global teams across other functions to ensure alignment between our GAPP efforts and our business priorities in India and a cohesive, unified company narrative in the market.

The Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) team leads the company’s engagement with executive branch officials, legislators, regulators and third-parties in the formation of public policy. Working closely with Google leaders, GAPP seeks to identify key policy issues, listen carefully to others’ views and opinions, and distill and share the company’s perspective on those issues with external stakeholders. While we focus on challenges affecting the internet, our issue areas are increasingly broad and encompass many areas where public policy, business, and technology intersect.

Responsibilities

  • Take an all of company approach to leading and empowering the GAPP team in India, including across Cloud, YouTube, Search, Advertising, Platforms and Devices.
  • Represent Google externally at the highest levels of policy-making and Government in India across all product areas and businesses.
  • Strategize and lead public policy campaigns across the full range of policy areas that has a company-wide impact, including AI, Privacy & Security, Content and Competition. 
  • Build a network of trade associations, industry partners, non-profit groups and others to support policies that enable Google to compete fairly in the market while preserving our product independence and license to operate.
