About the job

Like Google's own ambitions, the work of a Software Engineer goes beyond just Search. Software Engineering Managers have not only the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of Engineers. You not only optimize your own code but make sure Engineers are able to optimize theirs. As a Software Engineering Manager you manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy and help develop your team. Teams work all across the company, in areas such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, user interface design; the list goes on and is growing every day. Operating with scale and speed, our exceptional software engineers are just getting started -- and as a manager, you guide the way.

With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.

As a Tech Lead Manager (TLM) on the Search Infrastructure team, you will be responsible for leading and managing a team of engineers, while also taking technical ownership of critical infrastructure initiatives. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams across Search to deliver a flexible, scalable, and high-performance platform for Google Search.

You will be a key player in re-architecting a system that affects users, ensuring that infrastructure continues to evolve alongside advances in AI and machine learning.

In Google Search, we're reimagining what it means to search for information – any way and anywhere. To do that, we need to solve complex engineering challenges and expand our infrastructure, while maintaining a universally accessible and useful experience that people around the world rely on. In joining the Search team, you'll have an opportunity to make an impact on billions of people globally.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of engineers, focus on supporting growth, collaboration, and technical excellence.
  • Partner with Search feature teams and other infrastructure groups to ensure that solutions meet business needs and can adapt to future challenges.
  • Manage projects from inception through execution, and balance technical leadership with team management and people development.
  • Ensure the team’s deliverables align with organizational goals related to infrastructure scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
