Minimum qualifications:

  • JD, equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status) in the state in which the position is located.
  • 3 years of post qualification experience in private practice or an in-house team.
  • Experience partnering with executives and stakeholders on legal matters.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with one or more of supporting government reporting and compliance requirements, developing and making policy recommendations, supporting research and product development efforts using a risk-based framework.
  • Familiarity with AI regulatory regimes, emerging regulation, and existing legal frameworks.
  • Familiarity with issues at the heart of the public and government debate around Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its regulatory and policy landscapes across the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union.
  • Understanding of the technical workings of AI systems and processes such as ML training, model architectures and serving lifecycles.

About the job

In this role, you will advise on legal matters critical to the development and release of Artificial Intelligence models, products, and systems.
This is a heavily copyright-focused position centered on providing guidance across multiple jurisdictions regarding artificial intelligence model training and outputs, dataset collection, transactions, and open-source strategy. You will also navigate machine learning research, product development, copyright policy advocacy, and emerging global legislation in the field.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $218,000-$315,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Identify and advise on legal considerations across DeepMind research and product development efforts on a range of legal topics including liability, compliance, and copyright and data issues related to the development and deployment of AI systems and components.
  • Monitor and interpret evolving global regulations and compliance requirements, translating legal requirements into actionable technical guardrails for DeepMind and the industry.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to establish and refine external advocacy positions for existing and forthcoming regulatory regimes for AI, and advise on the implications for DeepMind research and products.
  • Support drafting and discussion of agreements. Evaluate and apply open-source licenses to both incoming and outgoing code and data.
  • Advise executive management on risks associated with AI research direction and existing governance frameworks; and present options to mitigate those risks.
