Senior Staff Linguist, Google Ads

Minimum qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a human research-oriented field (e.g., Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Social Science) or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 years of experience managing human computation programs.
  • 10 years of experience in theoretical and practical implementation of natural language processing (NLP) solutions that leverage linguistic knowledge.
  • 5 years of experience with coding or scripting languages (e.g., Python, R, SQL, or XLM/HTML/CSS/Javascript).

Preferred qualifications:

  • 10 years of experience in program management.
  • 10 years of experience in theory and practice of human annotation work.
  • 10 years of experience in scripting and text processing.
  • 10 years of experience with concepts and terminology in the domain, including best practices, current issues or controversies, and problems and pitfalls.

Analytical Linguists work across Google to drive improvements in quality, classification, information structure, and natural language understanding and generation. As an Analytical Linguist you will work both on complex projects spanning multiple products, groups, and disciplines, and on tightly focused efforts to produce specific product components or answer specific research questions. Analytical Linguists work in many different areas and arrive with a wide variety of skills—your specialization might involve natural language processing and understanding, phonology, phonetics, syntax, semantics, ontology, program management, human subject research, experimental design, statistics, corpus linguistics, large scale data acquisition, or any combination. This team is part of some of the most groundbreaking and exciting work at Google. It's our goal to use insights from linguistics and related fields to constantly improve our products.

We also enable Google to engage with customers at scale.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $221,000-$314,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Conduct research for journals and conferences that create impact on product’s success, extend/design conceptual frameworks and semantic representations to support models of language use, and develop and implement linguistic resources (e.g., annotated data, grammars, etc.) for different languages and Natural Language Processing (NLP) task-oriented applications.
  • Work with engineers and researchers to evaluate linguistic direction for language specific NLP and dialogue analysis/modeling, media (e.g., text, image, video) classifiers, and taxonomies, and train, evaluate, and debug custom classifiers or NLP/dialogue systems, identify errors/regressions, and propose solutions.
  • Process and manage large amounts of data, analyze the data and graph structures, and develop semantic representations and content.
  • Manage workflows, engage with stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate delivery of work, aligned with team priorities and product requirements.
