Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or other relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 15 years of experience in the engineering industry, with 5 years of experience in technical management.
- Experience building client platforms that power business and user use cases.
- Experience designing systems with privacy guarantees for the handling of sensitive user data.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with machine learning, on-device models/infrastructure and applying privacy frameworks to design privacy-forward systems.
- Experience driving initiatives from strategy to execution to address open-ended, ambiguous problems.
- Experience building inclusive teams with a healthy team culture.
- Ability and technical depth to uncover root causes of complex technical problems and provide guidance on solving them, with a passion for technology.
- Ability to inspire and motivate the engineering team to work together as a cohesive unit.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to represent complex technical, privacy, or business concepts with senior leadership.

We’re looking to take the Semantic User Location platform to the next-level to respond to the dynamic needs of the next generation of users, competitive landscape, and next-level growth of our products.
As the Director of Engineering for Semantic User Location Platform, you will drive the strategy and roadmap of a platform that serves clients across Google, including Maps, Sustainability, UGC and Ads. You will do this with a team of highly skilled cross-functional teams across engineering, product, user experience/research, legal and privacy. You'll develop engineering leads and teams, drive alignment across teams and functions, and flex across both strategic and operational initiatives.
The Geo team is focused on building the most accurate, comprehensive, and useful maps for our users, through products like Maps, Earth, Street View, Google Maps Platform, and more. Every month, more than a billion people rely on Maps services to explore the world and navigate their daily lives.
The Geo team also enables developers to use the power of Google Maps platforms to enhance their apps and websites. As they plot a course for the future of mapping, they are solving complex computer science problems, designing beautiful and intuitive product experiences, and improving our understanding of the real world.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $294,000-$414,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
- Lead a team of 45+ engineers spanning client/server infrastructure, ML models/quality, feature development, data pipelines, and federated analytics.
- Develop the strategy and drive execution for business-critical efforts requiring strong partnership across teams (e.g., Ads, Maps, Android) and functions (e.g., Legal, Privacy).
- Lead the design of privacy-forward solutions (e.g., on-device, federated analytics, trusted execution environments) based on a nuanced understanding of the privacy and regulatory landscape.
- Inspire and grow a team of engineering leaders to collaborate as one team.
