Security Engineer, Security Assurance, Google Public Sector

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with software development, pen testing, security assurance, blue team operations, or security consulting.
  • Experience with security assessments, design reviews, or threat modeling.
  • Experience in at least two of the following programming languages: Python, Go, C++, or Assembly.
  • Active US Government Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmentalized Information (TS/SCI) security clearance.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Certification in Offensive Security Exploit Developer (OSED), GIAC Certified Exploit Researcher and Advanced Pen Tester (GXPN), or Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP).
  • 8 years of experience in offensive security, including developing custom payloads and automation tools.
  • Experience with developing for containerized or cloud-native applications.
  • Experience in exploit development concepts.
  • Experience with network traffic analysis for purposes of Blue Team or network forensics.
  • Understanding of cloud service provider security risks and mitigations.

About the job

Our Security team works to create and maintain the safest operating environment for Google's users and developers. Security Engineers work with network equipment and actively monitor our systems for attacks and intrusions. In this role, you will also work with software engineers to proactively identify and fix security flaws and vulnerabilities.

The Google Public Sector (GPS) Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) team’s mission is to identify how to implement cloud solutions and services securely and to enhance existing security workflows using emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Security Architecture team is a sub-component under ATP and is focused security validation of services and systems, both internal and external to GPS, primarily through pen testing and tool development to enable the automation of security assessments.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $166,000-$244,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Conduct tests and security assessments across various GCP services (e.g., Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Functions, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, VPC, Identity Platform) to identify vulnerabilities and configuration weaknesses.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive test plans utilizing both automated tools and manual techniques, simulating real-world threat actor methodologies, including post-exploitation and lateral movement within GCP and hybrid environments.
  • Identify cloud-native security misconfigurations, such as Identity and Access Management (IAM) misconfigurations, service account privilege escalation, and insecure Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs).
  • Develop and maintain custom scripts related to security tooling (e.g., API scanning and enumeration tooling).
  • Perform security review on infrastructure for the purposes of ensuring workloads running on the infrastructure are protected both from internal and external threats.
