Tax Analyst, US Transaction Tax and Incentives

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7 years of experience in tax.
  • Experience with SQL.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with AI concepts, machine learning applications for tax, and data visualization tools to enhance reporting and compliance efficiency.
  • Experience working directly with product teams to determine the taxability of new offerings before they go to market.
  • Experience in Google Workspace (specifically Sheets for complex modeling and data manipulation).
  • Experience with tax engines (such as Vertex, Suretax, etc.) and their integration with Enterprise Resource Planning systems (e.g., SAP).
  • Ability to navigate state and local tax laws and apply them to product/service areas.
  • Proven track record of leading and defending state and local tax audits with minimal supervision.

Google's in-house tax team knows all things corporate tax. Made up of smart, perceptive Googlers with a flair for domestic, international, and sales and use tax, the knowledge and expertise of this team runs deep. You have years of experience in this field and an extensive knowledge of those tax issues most relevant to internet companies. While we don't give our Googlers individual tax advice, you make it easy for Googlers to get what they need to make good tax decisions. You find ways to work smarter by streamlining and automating our tax processes and systems, and find ways to be both innovative and compliant.

As a Tax Analyst for the US Transaction Tax team at Google, you will be focused on managing the complexities of indirect taxes. You will be a strategic thinker who acts as a primary guardian against financial and regulatory risk. You will be responsible for ensuring that Google’s vast array of products and services—ranging from hardware to cloud computing—remain compliant in an ever-evolving tax landscape.

In this role, you will be a problem-solver who can operate autonomously and "think outside the box" to streamline global processes. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate tax requirements into new product launches while leveraging Google tools and AI concepts to automate workflows. Ultimately, you are tasked with mitigating exposure through meticulous audit defense, precise compliance oversight, and high-level research into complex taxability issues.The name Google came from "googol," a mathematical term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. From developing forward-thinking analysis to generating management reports to scaling our automated financial processes, the Finance organization is an important partner and advisor to the business.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $137,000-$201,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Oversee the end-to-end life-cycle of U.S. transaction tax filings, ensuring accurate and timely submission to avoid penalties and interest and identify potential tax exposures and implement robust internal controls to safeguard the company during financial transformations.
  • Conduct deep-dive research into state and local tax statutes to resolve complex taxability issues related to emerging digital services.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to define tax requirements for new Google offerings, ensuring systems are configured correctly from day one.
  • Utilize AI concepts and advanced data analytics to automate repetitive tasks and enhance the scalability of tax reporting functions.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, shifting between technical tax analysis and high-level strategic planning with minimal supervision and serve as a subject matter expert, training stakeholders on tax implications and driving operational excellence across the organization.
