Senior Optical Transport Network Engineer

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6 years of experience with one or more optical technologies such as optical metro, long-haul DWDM systems, or submarine systems.
  • Experience in modelling optical transmission systems and/or optical networks.
  • Experience with planning and designing networks (e.g., multiple sites, multiple products, etc.).

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD in optical communications.
  • Experience with optical networking devices, optical fibers, optical modules and subsystems.
  • Experience with optical physical-layer analysis and testing.
  • Experience in one or more programming languages such as Matlab, C++, Go, or Python.
  • Experience with numerical modeling of coherent transceivers and optical line systems.
  • Experience in creating documentation, guidelines and technical requirement documents and excellent communication skills.

Google's Optical Networking Technologies (ONT) team is the one-stop shop for Google Global Infrastructure (GGI) optical transport needs. We are a team of engineers that provide mega-scale cloud connectivity by guiding photons across land and sea. Our mission is to deliver solutions that empower our partners to plan, build, and operate a reliable optical network. The ONT team is responsible for all optical technologies used in our global wide area network: including client transceivers, coherent pluggables, embedded coherent engines, metro and long haul DWDM optical line systems and subsea terminal equipment.

In this role, you will evaluate and qualify new technologies and develop tools and processes for introducing and managing these in the network.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $156,000-$229,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Define next generation optical line system architectures and digital coherent transceiver technologies.
  • Perform numerical and analytical modeling of line system architectures and coherent transceiver performance to understand design trade-offs.
  • Present technology concepts and proposals to cross functional teams.
  • Work closely with our NPI teams to successfully translate next generation concepts into production deployed hardware.
  • Drive vendor engagement to realize our next generation requirements.
