Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g. Java).
- 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, such as SDKs, shared libraries, or high-traffic cloud services.
- 1 year of experience with software design and architecture, including experience with API agreement definitions (e.g., gRPC, REST).
- Experience using Git or similar control systems for software development.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- 5 years of experience with data structures, algorithms, and JVM internals (e.g., memory management, concurrency, and performance tuning).
- 1 year of experience in a technical leadership role, mentoring junior engineers and driving multi-quarter project roadmaps.
- Experience with Google’s Java ecosystem, including build tools (Bazel/Blaze), protocol buffers, and developing accessible, developer-centric technologies.
- Experience contributing to or managing open-source Java projects, with a commitment to code quality and readability.

Within this organization, the Cloud Java team is dedicated to making GCP the premier destination for Java developers. We build high-performance API client libraries, local development tools, and foundational frameworks that allow Java applications to scale seamlessly.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $174,000-$252,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
- Write and test high-quality product development code to build idiomatic Java client libraries and automation tools that streamline API onboarding across the GCP ecosystem.
- Lead and participate in design reviews with peers and stakeholders to decide amongst available technologies, specifically focusing on API design, scalability, and backward compatibility.
- Review code developed by others and provide feedback to ensure best practices, including adherence to Google’s Java style guidelines, accuracy, testability, and JVM efficiency.
- Contribute to and lead the creation of existing documentation or educational content, adapting technical guides based on SDK updates, user feedback, and Java community standards.
- Triage complex system issues and debug, track, and resolve bottlenecks by analyzing the impact on network performance, service operations, and overall SDK quality.
