Director, Engineering, RCS Business Messaging and Protection

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree Computer Science or Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of professional experience in engineering or 13 years with an advanced degree.
  • Experience leading geographically distributed teams and working with cross-functional partners.
  • Technical experience in android, web, backend, or carrier technologies. Experience in monetization and spam and abuse.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working in, navigating, and leading within a complex regulatory environment.
  • Ability to innovate beyond the status quo while also leading and driving high quality execution in complex operating systems similar to Android.
  • Ability to represent Google externally as the domain expert for their area, working closely with Android’s OEMs and other ecosystem partners.
  • Ability to understand and respond to the needs of diverse customers. Ability to clearly and concisely communicate with the executives both internally and externally.
  • Excellent collaboration and partnering skills, especially in flat, functionally-oriented organizations.

About the job

The Rich Communication Services (RCS) for Business (RBM) and Protection team is part of the Android and Business Communications (ABC) organization. ABC’s mission is to help people and businesses meaningfully connect on any device across messaging, voice, and video. We do this through innovation in the Google Messages and Google Phone apps, investment in RCS (successor to SMS/MMS), and business generation for the entire mobile ecosystem. The work spans android, web, networking infrastructures, scaled backend systems, and enterprise services.

The RBM and Protection team’s mission is to provide a safe, helpful, and monetized messaging experience that connects businesses and users. RBM is built on top of the RCS protocol. We have an unique opportunity to push for a step change in the default texting experience for users globally, and scale RBM into a meaningful business for Google and Android’s partners.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $278,000-$399,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Own and drive the development of the product strategy, roadmap, and execution for multiple areas of focus, balancing short- and long-term priorities against various business needs. Lead the industry-wide transition to RBM from SMS, and make it the safest channel for users to communicate with businesses.
  • Collaborate with partner engineering leads across Google and the industry to identify, align, and execute joint initiates. 
  • Serve as the recognized technical subject matter expert for RBM, able to represent the product both internally and externally with executives.
  • Build an engineering team. Develop leadership talent through effective performance management and organizational design. Instill a culture of excellence that grows in a fast-paced environment.
