Associate Legal Counsel, Music and Aggregated Licensing

Minimum qualifications:

  • JD, LL.B., equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status) in the UK or an EU member state.
  • 3 years of attorney-level experience in government, in-house, or at a law firm.
  • Experience in music or other digital entertainment sectors, gained in-house or at a law firm, including copyright law as it pertains to sound recordings and musical compositions.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in the practical application of the European Copyright Directive.
  • Experience in regulatory or policy initiatives related to music, copyright, and technology within Europe and the wider EMEA region.
  • Familiarity with content licensing agreements, and frameworks for collective licensing and equitable remuneration.
  • Familiarity with legal and regulatory issues relating to generative AI and machine learning.

About the job

As part of the Music and Aggregated Licensing team for EMEA, you will work across law and technology, negotiating agreements with music partners and ancillary rights societies for YouTube and other Google product areas across the EMEA region; navigating and evolving regulatory regimes impacting YouTube in EMEA, including copyright and AI regulation; and counselling on new products and features wherever these impact EMEA deals or the EMEA region."

You will be working as part of a team of experienced, collaborative, and highly-capable lawyers. The role is impactful, frequently ground-breaking, with plenty of scope to learn and develop new skills and expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Review, draft, and negotiate licensing agreements with record labels, music publishers, collecting societies, and licensing hubs, primarily for YouTube and with a particular focus on publishing and ancillary rights.
  • Provide effective counsel to relevant company departments on music rights and other intellectual property matters, company policies and approvals.
  • Evaluate and advise on legal risk and positioning, escalating where necessary; Support continuous improvement of standard form agreements and legal processes.
  • Review draft legislative proposals regarding music, copyright and relatedrights, and provide advice and support to policy and other teams on any implementations relevant to YouTube and Google.
  • Coordinate product diligence for new product and feature launches, working closely with colleagues in the US, EMEA and APAC.
