Head of Public Policy

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 14 years of experience working on technology policy issues within government, think tanks, public interest groups, law, or relevant industry associations.
  • 5 years of experience in people management.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working on policy regulations and law for areas such as Cloud, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data.
  • Experience working with policymakers and key stakeholders in state and central governments, think-tanks, and in the public policy space.
  • Experience working on Public Service Delivery Platforms.
  • Understanding of government procurement and contracting process.
  • Understanding of the latest geopolitical shifts affecting technological trends, opportunities, and risks.
  • Excellent comprehension skills to understand regulations, law and bring out perceived and real impact on Google and its businesses.

About the job

In this role, you will develop and execute public policy strategy, outlook, and desired outcomes to forge a path forward in India, with impact beyond Government Affairs and Public Policy and direct impact on costs and achievement of objectives under Product Areas. You will determine and execute plans to support the overall operations and strategy of a sub-function within a Government Affairs and Public Policy function to ensure optimal execution against objectives for this function.

You will work within broad objectives/goals, applying knowledge to solve complex problems, which may have long-term impact on the core function/sub-function, and act as a key advisor to executive leadership on the development of overall policy and long-term goals. You will serve as the expert in the Policy environment affecting Google's business operations in the region, with knowledge of government and policy landscape to challenge conventional wisdom and existing models, and influence global understanding within the organization.

We help inform and educate users, advertisers, partners, opinion leaders--and our own employees--about the benefits of Google's products, our distinctive company culture/values and our approach to the big public policy issues of the day. You are quick-witted, entrepreneurial and intellectually curious. To succeed in this role, you are willing to try new things and can manage numerous projects with tight deadlines. Things happen quickly at Google, and to do great work, you need to be an enthusiastic team player who can work cross-functionally with partners across PR, Communications, Marketing, Product, and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Identify policy issues that may affect Google, understand the impact on business and users, and participate in policy campaigns with clear goals to shape a policy or set of policies.
  • Monitor and research current and relevant emerging public policy issues considering how Google should work with allied organizations and industries and work with business area leadership, Legal, Marketing, Trust and Safety, and Public Relations (PR) to develop and launch policy-friendly products.
  • Address policy and government relations problems, and develop and execute policy strategy that benefits the users and business.
  • Lead a team of individuals, and set, communicate team priorities that support organizational goals. Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role aligned to the broader organization's goals and meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development, and provide feedback and coaching.
