Software Engineer, Autocap

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience in general software development.
  • 2 years of experience with back-end software development.
  • 1 year of experience with distributed systems.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience in infrastructure development.
  • Experience with large-scale production environments and technologies, such as cluster management systems, Prodspec, Annealing.
  • Experience with data analysis, time-series data, or optimization algorithms.
  • Experience building scalable, reliable, and efficient distributed systems, and the knowledge of systems design.
  • Familiarity with capacity management concepts, resource forecasting, or service placement challenges.

The Autocap team is on a mission to provide a seamless, end-to-end solution for automated capacity management across all Google production services. We aim to empower service owners to effortlessly and efficiently plan, adjust, and deploy their service footprints. Our system forecasts demand, models service requirements, optimizes resource allocation and placement, and integrates with the P2020 Rollouts stack for safe automated actuation. As the default capacity management system for server platforms, Autocap plays a critical role in improving Google's resource efficiency and service reliability. We are working towards a future of spatially flexible, Google-wide service capacity management that is trustworthy, efficient, and fully automated.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $147,000-$211,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain backend services and components within the Autocap capacity management ecosystem.
  • Contribute to the architecture and implementation of scalable and reliable infrastructure for demand forecasting, resource modeling, supply management, and footprint optimization.
  • Collaborate with team members and partner teams (e.g., Spatial Flex, Rollouts, Server Platform, Flex) to integrate Autocap with other production systems and enhance end-to-end automation.
  • Improve system performance, reliability, and efficiency by refactoring code, optimizing algorithms, and addressing technical debt.
  • Contribute to the team's technical roadmap and help shape the future of automated capacity management at Google. Write and review design documents and high-quality code, adhering to Google's engineering best practices and standards.
